Description
Pollopel Island, now known as Bannerman's Island, is the site of Bannerman's Castle. The island is in the Hudson River in New York State and is accessed by ferry from the town of Beacon, NY. Francis Bannerman was born in Ireland of Scottish descent but came to the US as a child. He began purchasing military surplus and munitions and opened a store in New York City along with a mail order catalog. To store his surplus supply he purchased Pollepel island in 1900 and constructed a Scottish style castle as the arsenal. He also built a residence on the island for summer use. Construction ceased at Bannerman's death in 1918 but his son continued the business, although it declined. After the sinking of the ferry that served the island in 1950, the arsenal and island were left vacant. In 1967 New York State took possession and conducted tours but in 1969 a fire devastated the arsenal. The castle is now the property of NY State's Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. It is mostly in ruins. The island is now cared for by the Bannerman Castle Trust , a non-profit that works to stabilize the buildings and conduct tours by ferry.
