Description
The House of Refuge at sunset is a historic structure in Martin County. It was one of ten houses of refuge set up in the 1800s along the Florida coast to rescue shipwrecked sailors. Keepers stayed in the houses which were in isolated locations and served much like lighthouse keepers. Today it is a museum operated by the Elliott Museum nearby. This is the only one of the ten original houses that still survives.
